Pennsylvania Closing Philadelphia Area Highways Due To Hurricane Sandy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As Hurricane Sandy made landfall at the Jersey shore and the high winds made their way inland, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett announced he is closing the full length of Interstates 95 and 676; I-476 (non-toll portion); I-76 from the Pa. Turnpike to Passyunk Avenue and the U.S. Route 1 Extension in Philadelphia. Only emergency vehicles and essential personnel are permitted on the aforementioned roads from 7 p.m. through 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Corbett said tropical-force winds are creating dangerous traveling conditions in the Philadelphia area and urged motorists not to travel during the storm.

The Governor said, "PennDOT and emergency management personnel are closely monitoring the storm's impact and may implement similar restrictions in other areas if conditions warrant."
