Number of Plaintiffs Suing Conrail Over Paulsboro, NJ Derailment Nears 100

PAULSBORO, N.J. (CBS) -- As the cleanup from the Conrail freight train derailment in Paulsboro, NJ continues, people are lining up to sue the rail carrier over the leak of vinyl chloride.
Nearly 100 people have signed onto a lawsuit filed in Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court. (Conrail is headquartered in Philadelphia.)
Cherry Hill attorney David Cedar expects the number of plaintiffs in his lawsuit to grow.
"We're seeking compensatory damages for the actual harm that the individuals suffered, and monitoring for future harms that may occur," Cedar said today.
The group of plaintiffs includes those who sought medical treatment after breathing in fumes from the breached rail car, others who didn't but were evacuated, and even some who rode it out in their homes.
Conrail officials say they'll deal with all lawsuits in time. Right now, they say, they remain centered on cleaning up the derailment site and making sure people are safe.
