NJ Officials Look To Revise Regulations Governing Gun Dealers

By David Madden

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - New Jersey law enforcement officials have conducted a regular review of gun regulations in the state, and are proposing some changes to tighten the rules for retailers.

If you are a gun owner or a member of the NRA, you can relax, according to New Jersey State Police Captain Stephen Jones:

"These rules are all really aimed at those who sell guns and store guns, not at the consumer -- the people who have them at home. They're not going to be affected by this."

But the proposed changes, published in the New Jersey Register, will tighten regulations regarding how weapons are stored and secured at gun shops throughout the state.

"If they've got security system problems, it kind of tightens down the time frame during which they have to report that to police to make sure that those weapons are safely stored," explains Jones.

The changes also prohibit dealers from issuing a gun permit to anyone on a terror watch list.

The state routinely tweaks gun regulations every five years. The changes could take effect after a public comment period.
