Cape May Man Accused Of Shooting At Whales

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey tuna fisherman has been accused of shooting at whales from his fishing vessel.

Twenty-seven-year-old Daniel Archibald of Cape May surrendered Thursday to face the charges and was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.

Authorities say he used a World War II-era Mosin-Nagant rifle to shoot at pilot whales from the vessel "Capt. Bob."

A whale shot with a bullet from such a whale was beached and then died in Allenhurst in September 2011.

A lawyer for Archibald did not immediately return a call.

It's illegal to hunt, kill, capture or harass any marine mammal.
