NJ Lawmakers to Vote on Property Tax Cap

by KYW's David Madden

The New Jersey state senate is due to vote today on a two-percent property tax cap, a compromise reached over the weekend with governor Chris Christie. Assembly members got an earful on Wednesday at a Budget Committee hearing in Trenton.

Local elected officials from across the state insist the legislature is rushing to approve a tax cap while dragging their feet on the so-called "toolkit" of changes they need to bring labor costs under control.

Cherry Hill mayor Bernie Platt among them:

"We need real reform. Otherwise a cap is just the tail wagging the dog."

Police and firefighters insist the cap will put lives in danger. Leaders in the assembly have expressed support for the compromise, but have yet to schedule a vote, and promise the toolkit will take shape over the summer.
