Next Of Kin Program Launched By New Jersey Motor Vehicle
By David Madden
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – New Jersey Motor Vehicle officials have launched a new program that, on its face, might be difficult for some people to take, but it could prove vital in an accident.
If you have a drivers license or a state issued ID card, you can go on line and sign up with the Motor Vehicle Commission's next-of-kin registry at no cost.
"They can basically put up to two emergency contacts in the motor vehicle system that's easily accessed by members of the law enforcement community and only members of the law enforcement community," says MVC spokesman Mike Horan.
Should you get involved in an accident that leaves you dead or incapacitated loved ones can be contacted quickly.
The program is the result of a 2007 accident in which a young girl lapsed into a coma and died before her parents could be reached. Details on the program are available at www.state.nj.us/mvc.
