New Jersey Court Upholds Decal Law For Young Drivers

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) New Jersey's young driver law stands and that means you'll continue to see those little red decals on license plates that tell you the driver inside is under 21.
"Kyleigh's Law," as it's known, took effect in 2010 and attorney Gregg Trautmann has been fighting it ever since on the grounds it violates federal driver privacy and equal protection laws.
The fact that he's lost at every level of state court, including this unanimous state Supreme Court decision, hasn't changed his mind.
"I can rest easy knowing that at least we tried to undo a law that puts people at risk more than it helps people," Trautmann said.
Trautmann says the red decal announces the vulnerability of the driver inside and imperils young female drivers.
The attorney general's office acknowledges one case of a girl being stopped by a man impersonating an officer, but spokesman Paul Loriquet calls the law "reasonable requirements on youthful drivers in furtherance of public safety."
