3 Meteor Showers To Light Up Delaware Valley Sky Over Next Couple Weeks
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There are not one, not two, but three meteor showers that are active right now! First up, the Delta Aquariids.
They tend to be a little more faint. They're not really known for fireballs, but the Delta Aquariids can produce up toe 20 meteors per hour, and the peak is this week while the moon is barely illuminated.
The Alpha Capricornids shower is not very strong, producing only about five meteors per hour. However, this shower is known for fireballs.
Fireballs are spectacular, extremely bright meteors that are at least three time brighter than Venus.
And ongoing is one of the most well-known of all the meteor showers -- the Perseids. This shower is capable of producing 50 to 11 meteors per hour.
Activity will peak on Aug. 11 to the 13th, but the moon will be nearing its full phase at this time and could obscure viewing conditions.
Overall, the best time to search for shooting starts will be over the next week-and-a-half due to the moon-scant sky. Prime viewing will be from midnight until dawn, though you may catch a few during the evening hours.
All meteors come from a radiant point, but can be observed anywhere in the sky so set out a lounge chair, look up and enjoy the view.
