McNabb On Pederson: 'Question Is, Can He Be A Leader Of Men?'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- In 1999, the Philadelphia Eagles hired Andy Reid, who then drafted quarterback Donovan McNabb. Almost two decades later, the guy Reid brought in to be McNabb's backup -- Doug Pederson -- will reportedly be named the 23rd head coach in team history.

Pederson, 47, spent the last three seasons as offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs after starting his NFL coaching career under, you guessed it, Reid -- as the Eagles' offensive quality control coordinator in 2009.

McNabb spoke with NJ.com about Pederson.

"What I'll say about Doug is he's a teacher," McNabb told NJ.com. "He learned a lot when he was in Green Bay as a backup to Brett [Favre]. And he brought that with him. I know Alex Smith loves him, too.

"But here's the question can he be a leader of men, and not just the guy in the quarterback room.''

94WIP Morning Show co-host and former Philadelphia Flyers forward Keith Jones thinks McNabb's comments could be alarming.

"That is the biggest risk that the Eagles are taking here," Jones said on Friday. "[Tom] Coughlin is [a leader of men]. That was a safe bet, that he's a leader of men. Players that I've played with, that have become head coaches, I knew they'd become head coaches. McNabb is saying he doesn't know if Pederson will be a good leader of men. You should know."

McNabb, like most Eagles fans, seems skeptical of his former teammate in a head coaching role.

"I want to see the Eagles win," McNabb said, "but I don't know if you do that just by bringing guys back who were there.''
