Manayunk Bridge Could Open At Night Thanks To New Lighting

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The pedestrian and bicycle bridge that connects Manayunk and Roxborough with Lower Merion Township could be open at night once lighting is installed. But that most likely won't happen for a couple of years.

A $600,000 federal grant for 20 lights to illuminate the 3,000-foot former railroad bridge has been approved by the the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.

The contract should be completed by the end of the year and lights wont be put into place until 2018.

The re-purposed Manayunk bridge opened to non-motorized transportation in October as part of the region's circuit trails. The gates were locked at night for safety reasons due to lack of lighting.

"This is part of the circuit," says Kay Sykora, director of Destination Schuylkill River, "I sit on the circuit board, and the goal is to raise the profile of the circuit as sort of a collection of all of the trails in the region, both in Pennsylvania and New Jersey."
