Local College Students Grow Produce To Help Feed Area Residents

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Local college students are learning about agriculture while growing produce to feed the needy.

Hope of Harvest is a program that puts food on the tables of area residents. Scott Smith, Assistant Farm Manager at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown says this year, the program is expected to grow more than 50,000 pounds of vegetables.

"We work together with Philabundance and Bucks County Community Council. We produce and harvest it and it gets picked up by BCOC and Philadbundance and gets distributed to local food banks."

He says the idea to grow the tomatoes, corn, squash and other staples came from two students who wanted to give back to those in need.

Two recent grants worth nearly $100,000 will help expand the program.
