Kids At The Broad Street Run Will Show Support For Boston Marathon Bombing Victims
By John McDevitt
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia's "Broad Street Run" takes place this coming Sunday.
Many of the participants are planning to display visible signs of support in various ways for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.
Members of a youth running club will be among them. About 700 members of "Students Run Philly Style" are signed up for the Broad Street Run.
Many of the kids, ages 12 through 18, are from various Philadelphia schools, and will be among those wearing red socks to show support for Boston Marathon bombing victims.
Biyinah Cunningham, an eighth-grade student at Meredith Elementary School in Queen Village, will be sporting a special ribbon when she runs Broad Street. Her school has been selling them for three dollars a piece for the bombing victims.
"Showing people how bad this really affected us and what happened does affect all of the runners. They (victims) are not just by themselves. They have help, and it's us," Cunningham said.
One of the running leaders of "Students Run Philly Style" is Meredith math teacher Jessica Tilli.
"I think it is so important, that especially kids, are understanding how important it is to show support for other people and to have empathy and to understand that you have to support each other because we are all a part of this big global society," Tilli said.
