'I Don't Even Know What The DNC Is' Vacationers Hit Wildwood To Ditch DNC

WILDWOOD, NJ (CBS) -- When the Democratic Convention plans were rolled out by Mayor Jim Kenney in June he urged residents to stick around.

"We need Philadelphia residents . . . to help us sell the city, because it's not just about the DNC in 2016," Mayor Kenney said. "It's about the city going forward."

And while many did, others did not.

As conventioneers prepare for a history-making night, Vittoria Woodill headed down the shore to ask, who is watching the Democratic National Convention while they're on vacation?

"I don't even know what the DNC is," said beach goer Carl Bevard.

Bevard, accompanied by his son in a stroller, said the toddler most likely doesn't know what the DNC is either. And if he does he's never mentioned it, he said jokingly.

As Tori continued her poll down the boardwalk most of the answers that followed were the same: I came to escape, not to watch.

"My intentions when I go down the beach is kinda forget everything that's going on at home, and just cleanse myself of all that," James Clark said.

When thousands of people flock to the city it is not unlike local residents to skip town. When the Pope came to Philly in 2015, some described the city as a ghost town in many areas.

While the DNC was supposed to be much different, road closures, parking restrictions and thousands of incoming delegates could be the reason for the exodus.

So one thing Tori learned down the shore? When people go to Wildwood, they go to get away.
