Herbal Supplements Not Without Risks
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Do you take herbs or supplements to improve your health? In many cases, this is a great idea but there is a downside, especially if you don't know what you're doing. There can be a serious drug interaction and you might not even think of it.
For instance, if you take fish oil and the blood thinner coumadin or warfarin, you can actually increase the risk of bleeding problems beyond what coumadin normally does.
Another example is taking St. John's wort while on certain antidepressants. This can cause strange psychiatric issues. The bottom line is to learn all you can about the medication and the herbs you take.
It can make a big difference. You've got to be smart about it.
