Hear Philly: The Shore Thing - Car Shows, Air Shows and A Bike-A-Thon For Charity

By Andrew Kramer

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) - After summer officially ends, cars, planes, and bikes take over Ocean City throughout September.

Michele Gillian with the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce says it begins with Street Rod Weekend -- where classic cars will be on display on the Ocean City Boardwalk.

"It starts Friday, September 5th -- we have all the hot rods come in. They're displayed down at 6th Street and then they move to the boardwalk on Saturday and Sunday, and they're displayed throughout the boardwalk. There's so many new featured classic cars and people have lots of fun looking at the hot rods and the street rods and learning all about them."

The following weekend, not one, but two air shows fly into Ocean City.

"We have the Ocean City Airport Show which is Saturday, September 13th which is down at our airport," explains Gillian. "We have older planes come in and they do displays, we have an air show with some small, acrobatic air shows. We also have a museum display down there where kids can actually get in cockpits and we have some military planes down there for older people to get in and try to drive."

In addition to all those activities, Gillian says the fun continues the next day:

"On Sunday, September 14th at 1 o'clock we have stunt pilots and acrobatic pilots come from 6th to 14th Street and do their displays of acrobatic and stunts and it's a fabulous show and lots of people come and sit on the beach and enjoy it or sit on the boardwalk and have lots of fun."

After the planes take off, Gillian says more cars cruise onto the Ocean City Boardwalk the weekend after:

"The Corvette Show is Sunday, September 21st. We have over 350 corvettes that come to ocean city. They pull up on the boardwalk -- they double up on the boardwalk we have so many -- and we get to see the oldest to the newest. Some of the older models are just beautiful and people really like to come and see the newer ones as well, so there's something to do for everyone."

And by the end of the month, shore traffic won't be much of an issue, but on Saturday September 27th, thousands of bikers will be pedaling to Ocean City for the MS bike-a-thon.

"It starts in the Cherry Hill area," Gillian says, "and we have about 7,000 cyclists ride into Ocean City from Philadelphia and Cherry Hill to help fight and raise funds for awareness for multiple sclerosis. It's a great event -- it promises to bring lots of different people into Ocean City."

Gillian adds once the bikers arrive in town, there will be many specials to enjoy:

"They have a concert that night up at the music pier, there are activities, we still have all of our attractions open and there's great deals on hotels, motels, activities that go on throughout, on the boardwalk as well as downtown."
