GAP Pulls Controversial 'Manifest Destiny' T-Shirt
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The popular clothing store GAP has stopped selling a controversial t-shirt after a public outcry.
The shirt, which simply reads "MANIFEST DESTINY," was created by designer Mark McNairy and was offered through a partnership with GQ.
"Manifest Destiny" was a 19th century belief that the United States had a divine right to control the continent and it resulted in the displacement and murder of many Native-Americans.
Adding fuel to the fire was a Tweet on McNairy's Twitter page that read: "MANIFEST DESTINY. SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST." The Tweet was later deleted.
An online petition boycotting the t-shirt received thousands of signatures and prompted GAP to stop selling the shirt. Many Native-American groups also spoke out against the t-shirt.
