KYW Flashback: From Print To Broadcasting, A News Director Rises
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - At the dawn of KYW Newsradio there were few broadcasters with experience in wall-to-wall news, so staffers were recruited from newspapers and wire services.
Fred Walters, who went on to become news director during the turbulent 60's and 70's, was one of them. He says the electronic maze was a bit daunting:
"Remember I came out of the print side of the business and these were unfamiliar tools for me to work with."
But Fred was a quick study. He led KYW Newsradio through coverage of anti-war demonstrations, Legionnaire's disease, disasters, and the greatest celebration in Philadelphia history - the Bicentennial.
