Freeze Warning In Select Counties Brings Threat To Fall Harvest
By John McDevitt
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A freeze warning is in effect for certain areas of the region this weekend
High pressure systems at the surface, clear skies and calm winds are the perfect conditions to promote the frigid weather, according to Lance Frank -- a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Mount Holly.
He says there are some precautions you may want to take:
"The main precaution you can take is once the temperatures do drop into the 30s is to either cover or bring inside any sensitive crops or plants, especially any tropical plants."
Bruce Hellerick of Hellerick's Family Farm, about two miles north of Doylestown, says his pumpkins will do just fine, but they also sell flowers that you can pick yourself from the fields.
"We have some very large, thin tarps that we put on top of them to protect them. What happens is the heat from the fields actually generates and kind of generates and kind of protects the flowers."
He says the threat of freezing temperatures comes early this year, but is confident there will be very little damage before the season ends on November 1st.
