No air or water contamination after fire and explosion at wastewater facility in Wilmington, Delaware

Officials are investigating an explosion and fire that broke out at a wastewater treatment facility in Wilmington, Delaware, early Tuesday morning.

The 2-alarm fire started around 4:30 a.m. at the city's plant located on Hay Street, just beyond the 12th Street exit off Interstate 495.

Around 75 fire and EMS personnel responded.

Wilmington Battalion Chief Laurence Hinds said firefighters were met with heavy smoke involving an industrial dryer and associated equipment.

During the firefight, Battalion Chief Hinds said an explosion forced crews to evacuate the building.

After fighting the fire from the outside, it was placed under control about 90 minutes later.

Wilmington officials said the fire didn't impact operations at the plant and there is no air or water contamination from the incident.

No injuries were reported, but officials say the building sustained extensive fire damage.
