Eagles Player Flies High To Redo An Old Local Park
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A $2.9 million playground make-over is now moving forward thanks to some help from a well-known name in Philadelphia football circles.
City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and Eagles linebacker Connor Barwin joined forces in raising money to renovate the 7-and a half acre Smith Recreation Center Facility.
At the groundbreaking Monday morning, Mayor Michael Nutter said he was double-teamed by the two to get money out of the city budget, and Nutter was able to provide $400,000.
"This project is now going to happen, congratulations."
Barwin, and his "Make the World Better Foundation," held a concert at Union Transfer this summer which raised $300,000 for the cause.
"So proud to be a part of something like this because there's an entire community involved and this will result in creating a healthier South Philadelphia for the kids that live in this neighborhood."
The re-do will include a green stormwater infrastructure and rain gardens.
