Driving Is Top Option On Holiday Weekend Getaway Day
By Jim Melwert
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Friday is getaway day for many on the Labor Day holiday weekend, as they seek out one last summer adventure.
This weekend will see the most people travelling 50-miles or more for the Labor Day holiday since 2008.
Across the country, over 34-million people will travel, and 460,000 of those are from the Philadelphia area, including Jack, who's trekking all the way down to Panama City, Florida:
"Ooh, that's going to take me about 20 hours probably," he said.
Jack says he considered flying, but "this was kind of a last-minute thing, and the prices were a little too high."
He's in the majority, according to AAA, as they say 85-percent in the survey plan to drive, and most of them plan to leave Friday.
Also, expect a big weekend for the shore towns as AAA says the percentage of travelers headed to a beach or waterfront is higher this weekend than what they got in their surveys for Memorial Day or July 4th travel.
