District Attorney Larry Krasner Apologizes For Comments Surrounding Philadelphia's Crime Crisis
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- One day after CBS3 was first to report on exclusive details about a string of armed robberies across Center City, we pressed the district attorney about whether Philadelphia's streets are safe. Eyewitness News spoke with District Attorney Larry Krasner one-on-one Monday afternoon about what he describes as a "terrible crisis."
Last week, the DA said our streets are safe.
On Monday, he altered his messaging saying he understands why many may be on edge following a string of armed attacks that happened across Center City this weekend.
"We are up against a terrible spike in gun violence," Krasner said.
After backlash last week for comments about a lack of a crime crisis, Philadelphia's district attorney apologized on Monday.
"My words unintentionally hurt people," Krasner said.
Acknowledging a "significant" jump in robberies, Philadelphia police confirm there have been 2,213 this year to date -- a nearly 20% spike. It's something that has many questioning their safety.
"I just don't think I would come into the city by myself," visitor Heather Bollendorf said.
Sources confirm at least 10 armed robberies in recent weeks. Investigators believe they're all the work of the same crew.
Surveillance video shows a trio of armed robbers cornering a group of pedestrians outside the Comcast Center last Tuesday, taking off with high-end jewelry and cash.
On Saturday night, police say a groom, out for fresh air during his wedding reception along 3rd Street, was held up by two armed men who got away with his Rolex watch.
"I think it is very important that people exercise caution," Krasner said.
After Monday's public briefing, CBS3 asked the district attorney if he was scheduled to talk with Philadelphia's police commissioner.
"I may, I don't know what her availability is, but we take this all incredibly seriously," Krasner said.
Krasner says as the city continues on a record pace for violence and deadly crimes, his office remains focused on helping those impacted and holding those responsible to the full extent of the law.
On Tuesday, Mayor Jim Kenney is hosting a press conference on the city's efforts to help bring people back safely after COVID. CBS3 asked the DA if this was a good idea given these recent crimes and he said he is not here to second guess the mayor.
