Debut Of Area Top 10: Camden Looking For First State Title Since 1976

By Joseph Santoliquito

PHILADELPHIA, PA (CBS) — They know it's been a while. Most even know the date. It's why the Camden Panthers are on a mission this year. Camden's 2014 season ended prematurely, they felt, last November.

This year, Camden is aiming for its first football state title since 1976. The Panthers finished 9-1 last year, but for the last two seasons they were ousted in the South Jersey Group 2 playoffs. They were surprised last year, 18-7, by No. 8 seed Collingswood in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 playoffs.

It's a star-studded team led by Michigan recruits Brad Hawkins and Ron Johnson, and defensive end Jamal Holloway and linebacker Dymelle Parker, who both committed to Syracuse.

The Panthers will move up and play in South Jersey Group 3 this season.

"We're going to do whatever we can to win the state title, because I've never won a championship in my life at any level," Johnson said. "I know Camden hasn't won a state title since 1976. I want to go out with a bang."

Camden coach Dwayne Savage could have as many as six Division I recruits on his team this coming season.

"We head into every year with the goal to win the state championship, and we feel we have the talent to do it," Savage said.
