Consumer Report: Carfax Scam
by CBS3's Jim Donovan for KYW Newsradio 1060
When Amanda Hanson needed a new car she headed straight to the Internet and found a web site for America auto sales.
It claimed to be a Carfax certified dealership with an extensive list of repossessed cars at outrageously low prices.
She settled on a 2006 Chevy Cobalt and wired a deposit of more than $2,000 to the site.
Hanson: "What assured me of their reliability was the Carfax logo."
But unfortunately for Amanda, the web site was a scam.
She was left $2,000 poorer and without a car.
One red flag that something was fishy was with the web site because Carfax doesn't certify dealerships.
Chris Basso is with Carfax:
"These are trusted companies that consumers rely on, and they're playing off that trust to dupe unknowing consumers."
