Cold, dry Sunday before rain moves across Philadelphia area. Here's the weather forecast

Sunday will start out cold but dry, a good time to get a run out to the store to get some groceries or return some gifts. The earlier the better as another weather maker arrives Sunday evening into Monday.

It's a warmer system so we'll go from salting the driveway to needing the umbrellas, especially on Monday. But the winds may make it difficult to hang on to it.

A few light sprinkles will be possible in the Philadelphia area later this afternoon, but with above freezing conditions freezing rain will not be a concern. The Lehigh Valley and Poconos will have temperatures near or slightly below freezing as the light rain arrives later this evening.

This could result in a thin layer of freezing rain for the first half of tonight. Temperatures overnight will then warm, allowing for any freezing rain to melt.

NEXT big weather change

Warming temperatures overnight Sunday into Monday will continue to warm with high temperatures Monday afternoon peaking in the mid-upper 50s.

The surge of warmth will be ahead of a cold front which will also come with the chance for scattered rain showers Monday morning. The rain will taper off through midday as wind speeds begin to increase as the actual cold front approaches.

Temperatures will then drop quickly through the second half of Monday afternoon as the winds gust between 35-40 mph. The colder air combined with the winds will send feels-like temperatures into the 20's and teens Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Cold air will remain in place through the remainder of the week with a small chance of a few snow showers New Year's Day on Thursday. This chance for snow will be followed by another push or Arctic air which will likely keep temperatures below freezing from Thursday night until Saturday afternoon.
