Coast Guard Helps Rescue Nine People Off South Jersey

BARNEGAT LIGHT, N.J. (AP) — Coast Guard crews have helped rescue four children and five adults who were aboard a recreational boat that was sinking in waters off southern New Jersey.

Officials say a passing boater called Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light around 1:30 p.m. Sunday to report seeing the recreational boat hit a submerged jetty near Barnegat Light.

A small crew 25-foot response boat and a 47-foot motor life boat crew from the station responded to the scene and helped rescue six of the nine people from the water. The remaining three were rescued by crew members from a Sea Tow vessel, which also dislodged the sinking boat from the jetty.

Officials say all nine people aboard the recreational boat were wearing life jackets and did not appear to be seriously injured.
