City Does Its Salting And Shoveling Thing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia officials say they have deployed 100 trucks to spread 3,000 tons of road salt on city streets.

Last night at 10 p.m., Streets Department crews began applying a brine solution to prevent icing on roadways.

The Streets Department said it would continue snow operations throughout Friday until conditions improved.

Mayor Michael Nutter was urging caution for motorists and pedestrians.

"I want to urge all drivers to use caution while on the road today," the mayor said in a written statement issued mid-morning Friday.  "Even after the snow stops this afternoon, the roads could still have black ice on them. Also, check on your elderly neighbors and family to make sure they're safe and prepared for the weather."

The mayor's statement also included a reminder that property owners must clear a sidewalk path of at least 36" wide within six hours of the end of the storm.

The city also asked motorists to park their cars as far from the corner as possible. Cars parked too close to the corner impede the turning radius of salting vehicles, city officials said.

City officials added that Friday's trash collection has not been impeded by winter weather conditions. Residents who normally leave their trash out for Friday pick-up should do so.

To report a street in need of salting or plowing service, call 311.
