Candidates Spar Over Controversial Ad
GLOUCESTER COUNTY, NJ (CBS) - A political ad in the hotly contested Gloucester County Freeholder Board race has included an issue that strikes close to home for one of the GOP Candidates. An ad featuring a bald breast cancer patient appeared in the mailboxes of area constituents over the last couple of days.
The ad suggests that Republican candidates Larry Wallace and Vince Nestore and their counterparts in the state capital don't care about cancer, a reference to Governor Christie's veto of funding for Breast cancer screening. Wallace who lost his mother and son to the disease is heartbroken and furious all at the same time:
"I've had to hold my mother while she drew her brother. One can imagine holding a nine year old little boy as he fought for his last breath. This isn't a joke and shouldn't be a campaign issue."
Democratic candidate Heather Simmons disagrees that it is a personal attack:
"As Freeholders it is our obligation to lobby the state on issues related to the people who elected us into office. And certainly as a woman, I stand by my feeling that I can't support a governor or party that would cut breast cancer screening."
