Bucks County Man Collecting Bicycles For Workers In Third World Countries

NEWTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - A 65-and-older community in Newtown, Bucks County is collecting used bikes to help workers in third world countries. Pennswood Village is collecting bikes this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine.

If you have a bicycle that is no longer being used, and is in repairable condition, you might want to drop it off. George Kurz, a resident of Pennswood Village, is coordinating the event.

"One of the things that I like most about this organization is that the work done to repair the bikes is done overseas. So, that it involves setting up a bicycle repair shop and providing employment for one or two bicycle technicians."

He says people in countries in Central America, Africa, even the Phillipines can use the bikes to get to work, school and health services.

"They may have to walk five or even ten miles to work and getting reliable transportation is very difficult so a bicycle can make a great difference in getting a person to and from work."

Tax-deductible receipts will be available. Kurz says Bikes for the World is also asking that each bike be accompanied by a $10 donation to cover shipping costs.
