BLOG: Verizon To Charge $30 Upgrade Fee

By Jim Donovan. If you're a Verizon Wireless customer and you were planning to upgrade your phone in the near future, you may want to do that sooner rather than later. Real soon in fact! That's because the carrier has announced that beginning in a bit more than a week it will start charging customers a $30 fee for cellphone upgrades, that's on top of any discounted price they pay for the new device with a two year contract.

The new policy starts on April 22. Verizon joins national competitors AT&T and Sprint, which already charge $36 in upgrade fees.

In a statement Verizon says, "This fee will help us continue to provide customers with the level of service and support they have come to expect, which includes Wireless Workshops, online educational tools, and consultations with experts who provide advice and guidance on devices that are more sophisticated than ever."

Yeah, sure.
