Amazon drone deliveries coming to parts of South Jersey this fall: "We have no say over the matter"

For some South Jersey residents, their next Amazon haul may arrive from the sky as the delivery giant plans to begin drone deliveries in Gloucester and Camden counties in mid-October, officials said.

In a social media post, Chief of Police William Murphy said Mantua Township officials recently participated in a Zoom meeting with Amazon representatives about the proposed operation.

Amazon said its proposed delivery area will include nearly all of Mantua Township and the Borough of Wenonah. The drones will launch from the Amazon facility in West Deptford Township, Murphy's post said.

Drone deliveries are expected to be limited to 15 minutes before sunrise and ending 15 minutes after sunset. The drones are authorized to operate at altitudes below 400 feet.

Murphy said the information was being shared with residents to help prepare them for the upcoming operation.

Mantua Township Mayor Bob Zimmerman said in a social media post, "Please understand that whether you are for or against deliveries of this kind by drones, we have no say over the matter."

In a statement to CBS News Philadelphia, Amazon said, "We are always exploring new ways to get customers a wider selection at faster speeds. Prime Air currently delivers to customers in locations across the country and the response from customers using Prime Air has been overwhelmingly positive. We are currently working with local officials and exploring opportunities to expand our fast, reliable drone delivery service to reach customers in areas across the country."

CBS News Philadelphia has reached out to the mayor's office and police department for comment and has yet to hear back.
