9 Months After Sandy, Rides Run In Seaside Heights

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) — Beachgoers are celebrating another milestone in the recovery of one of New Jersey's famed seaside attractions.

Some rides at Seaside Heights' Casino Pier are back running this weekend, nine months after Superstorm Sandy left a trail of devastation.

Others are planned to reopen as renovations continue.

While Saturday marked the first day the full pier was open to customers, the town started running rides free of charge on Friday night.

The pier was the former site of the Jet Star roller coaster that was swept into the ocean by Sandy, creating one of the storm's enduring images. The roller coaster was removed in May.

Officials say a new ride called "Superstorm" will open soon.
