3 Philly Players Among 2016 Highest Paid Athletes

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- What do Cliff Lee, Ryan Howard, and Sam Bradford all have in common? None of them will be in Philly by this time next year and...money.

Lee, 37, is retired. Howard, 36, is on the verge of retiring. And Bradford, 28, is entering a lame-duck season with Carson Wentz inevitably ready to take his job. However, all three made Forbes' list of the top-100 highest paid athletes of 2016.

Among the three, Lee ranked the highest on the list at No. 38 with $29.3 million in pay, $29.2 million in salary, and $100,000 in endorsements. Lee announced his retirement from baseball this past winter.

Howard comes in tied for 53rd on the list with $25.6 million in pay, $25 million in salary, and $600,000 in endorsements. The former NL MVP and World Series champion is hitting just .150 this season and was recently benched. Criticism for Howard is high among fans, in large part due to the dichotomy of his salary and performance.

Howard has a buy-out option of $10 million for 2017, meaning this is likely his final season with the Phillies.

Bradford, who recently signed a two-year extension worth $35 million with the Eagles, comes in at No. 60. Bradford's pay is $24.3 million, his salary is $24 million, and his endorsement money is $300,000.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the top two highest paid athletes in 2016, with LeBron James coming in third. Over the past year, Forbes estimates that Rinaldo has made about $88 million, Messi about $81 million, and James about $77 million.

The 100 top-earning athletes are from 23 total countries and compete in ten sports. There are 26 baseball players among the top 100, the most common sports seen on the list.
