'21 Jump Street' Locks Up First Place At Box Office
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There was nothing undercover about 21 Jump Street.
The weekend's only new mainstream attraction, a comedy about undercover cops based on the eighties TV series, starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, arrested audiences to the tune of $35-million, good for a robust first-place finish on its debut weekend.
That dropped the leader of the last two weekends, the animated Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, to second place. But it still took in a respectable $23-million in its third weekend of release.
The holdover sci-fi thriller, John Carter, took third with a total of $14-million.
No other title eclipsed the $5-million mark, and the only other new title to crack the top ten was the Will Ferrell comedy, Casa de mi Padre, which earned $21-million and finished ninth.
Overall, industry-wide totals were on pace with those of last year, with The Hunger Games poised for an assault on the box-office record books next weekend.
