13-Year-Old Recovers After Suspect Opens Fire Into Crowd In Hunting Park

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A 13-year-old boy is in stable condition at St. Christopher's Hospital after suffering from a single gunshot wound to his leg.

The shooting happened in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia on the 4300 block of North Darien Street just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police are looking for suspects and the vehicle seen leaving the scene minutes before the shooting. The passenger of the vehicle, turned assassin, is accused of opening fire on a group of children and adults.

"I was putting the trash out and I just heard gunshots," says Evelyn Felicano, a neighbor who heard the gunfire.

Philadelphia police say eight shell casings were found at the scene from a large caliber semi-automatic weapon.

Officials say the 13-year-old was caught in the line of fire as a result of an apparent fit if road rage. Prior to the incident neighbors tell police a woman driving a newer model car nearly struck the crowd.

Eyewitnesses say an argument then took place between the woman in the car and the group.

The woman allegedly returned to the scene of the incident with an armed male passenger in the car.

"When the vehicle stopped at the intersection, the front seat passenger reportedly exited the vehicle and began firing shots north on Darien Street, said Chief Inspector Scott Smalls. "Just firing at a crowd."

"Innocent kids getting hurt, it's a shame what our city has come to," Evelyn said. "It's horrible."

The vehicle fled the scene after the shooting. Detectives are set to review surveillance footage from the area in hopes of getting a look at the vehicle.
