You don't want to be in a car accident in this state

Personal finance site WalletHub.com has done some research on which states are the riskiest to drive a car in, and it came up with the answers.

WalletHub looked at the minimum insurance requirements for each state and Washington, D.C., and factored that in with the percentage of drivers with no insurance at all. The analysis revealed where motorists had the biggest (or least) exposure in the event of a collision.

"Florida is the state where you least want to have an accident," WalletHub concluded.

Why? The state doesn't require as much insurance as most states, and nearly a quarter of all drivers have no insurance.

Maine, in addition to being at the opposite end of the East Coast, is also Florida's opposite when it comes to driving and insurance. Maine requires coverage for medical payments and for uninsured drivers in addition to a high level of liability insurance. Plus, less than 5% of Maine drivers are uninsured, WalletHub found.

The amount of liability insurance required in a particular state didn't seem to have a correlation to the percentage of drivers who failed to get insurance, the site said.

These are the riskiest states after Florida to be a driver, according to the analysis:

    • Oklahoma
    • New Mexico
    • Mississippi
    • California
    • Tennessee
    • Michigan

These are the least risky states after Maine to be a driver, according to the analysis.

    • North Dakota
    • New York
    • Maryland
    • New Hampshire
    • Utah
    • Massachusetts
    • Oregon
