(CBS/AP) If you're looking for fashion trends from Sunday night's Video Music Awards, think metal - not heavy metal but metallic colors like silver and gold.

There was also a lot of sequins and lace on the women and leather on both men and women.

"Dancing With the Stars'' contestant Audrina Patridge glittered in a sparkly silver mini-dress topped with silver belts and tons of bangles.

Singer Selena Gomez also chose silver - a stapless gown edged in blue sequins.

Stephanie Pratt and Lauren Bosworth of "The Hills" both shimmered in gold gowns.

Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine tapped into several trends - with a body-hugging gold lace design by Givenchy.

Lace also was the choice of Ciara - who wore a black lace number with feather detailing - and Katy Perry, whose sheer black and white ballerina-length gown left little to the imagination.

Among those sporting leather were Cher, in a brief and sheer re-creation of her 1989 music video costume, Justin Timberlake, Ke$sha, Justin Bieber, Jared Leto, and Penn Badgeley.

The "Jersey Shore" cast presented a mixed fashion bag. Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi's blue print one-shoulder dress was a disaster, but Jenni "JWoww" Farley cleaned up nicely in sleek black. Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino, as usual, tore off his shirt on the red carpet.

One of the cleverest looks of the night - outside of Lady Gaga - belonged to Jane Lynch of "Glee" who topped her black wide-legged pants and crisp white shirt with a black jacket bearing a tracksuit-like white stripe down the arms.
