NEW YORK (CBS) Lady Gaga may've been teary-eyed as she accepted the Video of the Year "Moon Man" for "Bad Romance," but the bloody pieces of meat she wore as her dress got as much attention on Sunday night as her music.

"I never thought I'd be asking Cher to hold my meat purse," quipped the 24-year-old entertainer.

The dress was designed by Franc Fernandez (and was one of her many outfits during the MTV gala). It was the same head-to-toe ensemble with matching meat shoes that she sported on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan.

Ellen DeGeneres, who is a vegan, taped the season opener of her show last night at the Nokia Theater and asked Gaga about the dress during an interview on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

"Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth," Gaga told DeGeneres, according to USA Today. "It has many interpretations but for me this evening, if we don't stand up for what we believe in and if we don't fight for our rights pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones. And, I am not a piece of meat."

DeGeneres then presented the pop star with a veggie bikini and suggested she try that next time she wants to make a statement.
