Vacations Unlimited At Netflix
Most employees get an average of ten vacation days a year, but Netflix's 300 salaried employees are taking 25 to 30 days off a year. Why so much free time? The company allows its salaried employees to take as many vacation days as they want as long as they get their work done. (The company's much larger hourly workforce doesn't get this option.)
More companies, like Best Buy, are letting employees in their corporate headquarters set their own hours. But Netflix's vacation policy is unprecedented. And silly if you ask some other companies. One Yahoo spokeswoman commented on her company's policy:
"We're a grown-up company, with over 12,000 employees, and you have to have some semblance of process and procedure."
Experts don't think this idea will catch on with larger Fortune 500 companies, but Netflix maintains that it's right for them. The employees at Netflix sure aren't complaining, and the company managed to clock nearly $1 billion in sales last year.
