Top Videos Of The '90s

VH1 has put together a list of what it considers to be the top 90 videos of the 1990s. And Mike Tierney, VH1 vice president of music programming, reveals on The Early Show the hottest videos of the decade.



The videos were selected by a panel of music video experts and the goal was to assemble a definitive list that would represent the state of the art for the 1990s, Tierney explains.

The following is a list of the top 10 videos of the 90 selected:

1. Nirvana"Smells Like Teen Spirit"
2. R.E.M"Losing My Religion"
3. Madonna"Ray of Light"
4. Beastie Boys"Sabotage"
5. George Michael"Freedom '90"
6. Guns 'N Roses"November Rain"
7. Sinead O'Connor"Nothing Compares 2 U"
8. Pearl Jam"Jeremy"
9. Chris Isaak"Wicked Game"
10. Alanis Morissette"Ironic"

The videos were judged on two broad criteria:

Hit song:The song should have had major impact or strong influence on the music of the decade.

Great video: The video should have had impact for any of several reasons:

  • Technical achievement: Served as creative breakthrough, moved along the art form.
    More News

  • Storytelling: Reinforced or accentuated the message and emotional element of the song.
  • Image making: Communicated the personality and charisma of the artist.
  • Unit shifting: Achieved the videos' most basic purpose: selling records.

Madonna appears on VH1's list of 90 videos the most with five videos:
  1. "Ray of Light"
  2. "Justify My Love"
  3. "Vogue"
  4. "Take a Bow"
  5. "Beautiful Stranger"

Tied with three videos each on the list of 90 are Janet Jackson and Aerosmith.
