NEW YORK -- "Hamilton," the hip-hop stage biography of Alexander Hamilton, won the 2016 Tony Award for best new musical, capping an emotional night in which many in the Broadway community rallied to embrace the LGBT community after a shooting at a gay Florida nightclub.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical biography about the first U.S. treasury secretary won 11 Tonys. The show was up for a record-breaking 16 nominations, but ultimately, "Hamilton" did not break the record of wins in a night. That honor goes to "The Producers," which won 12 Tonys in 2001.

Still, the cast of "Hamilton" seemed very moved by the 11 honors. Miranda teared up during the show's first win, when Renee Elise Goldsberry won Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

During Miranda's own first visit to the stage to accept a Tony, he recited a new poetic work, inspired by his wife and dedicated to the victims of the mass shooting at a nightclub that had taken place in Orlando hours before the awards show.

"When senseless acts of tragedy remind us that nothing here is promised, not one day," he recited.
"This show is proof that history remembers
We live through times when hate and fear seem stronger
We rise and fall and light from dying embers remembrance that hope and love last forever.
Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside
I sing Vanessa's symphony. Eliza tells her story. Fill the world with music, love and pride."

Three of the four best actor in a musical awards went to "Hamilton" cast members, including Best Lead Actor for Leslie Odom Jr., Best Featured Actor for Daveed Diggs and Best Featured Actress for Renee Elise Goldberry.
