Diana's Final Hours

A timeline from the Coroners Inquest provides insight into Princess Diana and Dodi al Fayed's last moments before their fatal crash in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997. Here are some key moments from the hours preceding:


Aug. 30
4:35 p.m.

Princess Diana and Dodi al Fayed enter the Ritz Hotel accompanied by bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones through a revolving back door. They take an elevator to the first floor, where they enter the Imperial suite.


5:42 p.m.

Dodi al Fayed and Trevor Rees-Jones drive to Repossi jewelers, returning nine minutes later. Fayed is holding a brochure from the store. A member of the staff later takes two rings to the Imperial suite.


6:53 p.m.

The couple leave the Ritz Hotel one at a time and are driven to Dodi al Fayed's apartment near Arc de Triomphe.


7 p.m.

Henri Paul goes off duty.


9:51 p.m.

The couple return to the hotel via the front entrance and head towards a restaurant, where they stay until 10:01 p.m.



10:08 p.m.

Henri Paul returns to the hotel.


10:20 p.m.

Fayed talks to a night duty manager, who spends several minutes talking to Henri Paul and two Ritz chauffeurs.


10:30 p.m.

Henri Paul makes the first of five trips to Place Vendome in front of hotel, speaking to paparazzi on the last three occasions.


10:43 p.m.

Henri Paul enters the Bar Vendome. Paul exits the bar with Trevor Rees-Jones about 25 minutes later.



11:51 p.m.

A Mercedes and Range Rover are sent on a dummy run to test reaction of the paparazzi.


Aug. 31
12:06 a.m.

Princess Diana and Dodi al Fayed wait at the hotel's back service exit for their car to arrive. Fayed is seen with his left arm lightly around the princess' waist, their heads touching, during about seven minutes of waiting.



12:12 a.m.

Checking for the Mercedes, Henri Paul exits and reenters the hotel several times through the back service exit.


12:14 a.m.

Henri Paul re-enters the hotel, standing near the rear door and appears to be talking to Princess Diana and Dodi al Fayed. Diana appears to salute with her left hand as Paul returns to the security office.



12:17 a.m.
A Mercedes driven by Henri Paul leaves the hotel with Princess Diana and Dodi al Fayed and bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones inside. They are trailed by paparazzi. Approximately 15 minutes later, the Mercedes crashes into a pillar in the Pont d'Alma tunnel. Rees-Jones is the lone survivor.
