Three Guys And Three Guitars
Three years since its last platinum-selling album, "Sugar," Tonic has struck success again with its current album, "Head on Straight."
The album has earned the group two 2003 Grammy Award nominations - for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Performance By A Duo or Group With Vocal. The band is now setting out on its first all-acoustic tour. But first, they stopped by The Saturday Early Show's Second Cup Café to perform some cuts from "Head on Straight."
The band members - singer-guitarist Emerson Hart, guitarist Jeff Russo and bassist Dan Lavery - aren't new to performing with only acoustic instruments. They say they played acoustically in coffee shops in the 1990s. But that was before the platinum-selling band became famous for singles such as "If You Could Only See," "You Wanted More" and "Open Up Your Eyes."
Tonic made its debut album, "Lemon Parade," in July 1996. The single "You Wanted More" from the "Sugar" album became a radio hit, thanks to its inclusion on the "American Pie" soundtrack.
It took the Los Angeles-based trio only six weeks to create "Head on Straight" in Hawaii, where they say they were able to work at their own pace with little distraction.
