The Wedding Planner: Which carriage will Kate Middleton use?

The Australian State Coach. Victoria Arbiter

(CBS) CBS News royals contributor Victoria Arbiter, reporting from London, will be giving CBSNews.com readers daily updates on plans for the April 29 royal wedding.

LONDON (CBS) When faced with a choice of 100 carriages from the royal collection, how's Kate Middleton to pick? Personally, I'd opt for the Gold State Coach. Unfortunately, it's only used for coronations.

That leaves a mere 99 to choose from. There's the Australian State Coach, a gift to the Queen from the people of Australia in 1988 (thanks for that, Aussie readers!), the Irish State Coach and the Scottish State Coach, each spectacular in its own right.

However, it's an old faithful that Prince William and Middleton have turned to for their big day: the 1902 State Landau.

It was built especially for King Edward VII, whose wide girth was taken into consideration during construction. That means there's plenty of room for a large meringue-style dress (if Kate so chooses).

Drawn by six grey postillion horses, it will be a breathtaking sight as it carries the newlyweds from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace on April 29. For commoner Kate, this carriage certainly won't be turning back into a pumpkin at midnight.

If it's pouring with rain - as it's been known to do in Old Blighty - then a glass coach will be standing by. It, too, has an illustrious history, having carried many a royal bride to her wedding, including the Queen Mother, Princess Anne, Lady Diana Spencer and Sarah Ferguson.

For fear of a rebellion from the waiting crowds eager for a glimpse of the happy couple, let's just hope the April showers hold off and the sun pours down on this memorable day for the Empire and her Realms.

Until next time, royalphiles, keep calm and carry on.
