Ohio State fans celebrate with dozens of dumpster fires

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Thousands of Ohio State fans took to the streets in raucous celebration following the Buckeyes' 42-20 win over the University of Oregon.

However, along with the good cheer, there were dozens of fires, and police said they were forced to use pepper spray and tear gas to disperse some of the crowds.

A police spokesman says there were 30 to 40 fires in trash cans and dumpsters.

Almost immediately after the win, fires were spotted off campus along Indianola Avenue, reports CBS affiliate WBNS in Columbus.

Students began lighting up trash and couches in the front yards, and that meant Columbus Firefighters had to respond immediately to put them out.

The fires spread from couches and trash cans to dumpsters.

One after another surfaced throughout the morning and arson investigators will be taking a closer look to see if they can charge anyone with the damage that was caused.

There was no word of injuries or arrests.

The cheers, chants and car horn blowing from people caused gridlock early Tuesday after revelers spilled out of bars near the campus, celebrating the university's win in the first national title game in college football's playoffs.

Thousands converged on the Ohio State football stadium, where police turned them away. Most headed back to the bar area, where cruisers lined the street and officers limited pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The crowds began going home within about two hours.

Some students and fans got a taste of tear gas as they tried to celebrate at Mirror Lake on south campus.

Police used tear gas to break up celebrating fans who wanted to take a dip in the water, even though it was frozen.

No problems were reported in Oregon.
