Starbucks "Countersuit": Woman sues over alleged burns, coffee giant alleges fraud
(CBS) - A Pennsylvania woman who claims she got burned - literally - by a New York City Starbucks, has a bigger fight ahead.
The plaintiff, who claimed her stomach was burned by a scalding cup of Starbucks tea back in the summer of 2006, now faces fraud allegations from the caffeine colossus, the New York Post reports.
A little whipped with that?
Riffat Qureshi is a married mother of four from Sayre, Pa., and according to the Post, a doctor and self-described "professional model." The paper says that in a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, she claims she was splashed with boiling water at an NYC Starbucks when the barista slid her tea across the counter, shouting, "Catch the cup."
Starbucks is accusing Qureshi, 36, of faking her burn injuries from the alleged July 2006 incident, with a lawyer for the company saying that Qureshi's own physician testified that he diagnosed her with a rash and skin infection.
This may or may not amount to a hill of beans.
