Sore Back May Sideline Elway

Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway, recovering from a right hamstring injury, is in danger of missing Sunday's game against Philadelphia because of an aching lower back.

Coach Mike Shanahan said he would not know until game time whether Elway would play. Elway left practice Thursday and did not return Friday.

Forum: Do the Broncos need Elway to repeat?

  • "We'll get a gut feeling when John goes out there, warming up, exactly how that lower back feels," Shanahan said.

Elway missed last week's game against Oakland because of a strained right hamstring. Backup quarterback Bubby Brister led the team to a 38-16 victory.

Shanahan said Friday that Elway's hamstring was much better.

If Elway does not play against the Eagles at Mile High Stadium, it will be just the 12th game he missed due to injury in his 16-year NFL career.

"He's going to be getting treatment for the next couple of days and hopefully he'll be 100 percent and ready to go," Shanahan said.

Elway led the Broncos to the Super Bowl championship in January. Denver is 4-0 and Philadelphia is 0-4.
