Serena Drops Out Of Doubles

Serena Williams, beaten by Lindsay Davenport in the U.S. Open quarterfinals, withdrew from the doubles competition Thursday because of an inflammation in the big toe on her left foot.

The injury is described as chronic,

Williams and her sister, Venus, defending doubles champions at the Open, were scheduled to play their semifinal match on center court against Cara Black and Elena Likhovtseva Thursday.

Serena's withdrawal put Black and Likhovtseva in the finals for the doubles title.
