HAYWARD, Calif. — Alameda County sheriffs deputies are helping search for an inmate who escaped as he was being transported by out-of-state law enforcement deputies Tuesday morning.

Deputies from Boone County, Kentucky were transporting Shawn New to San Francisco International Airport for extradition when he escaped at around 9:45 a.m. The deputies’ rented Honda Civic was in stop-and-go traffic when he escaped from the vehicle and fled into the nearby Hayward neighborhood.

The Honda Civic being used was just a normal rental car and not outfitted with any special prisoner transport equipment, reports CBS San Francisco.

The 27-year-old, who is wanted on fraud-related charges, was wearing handcuffs at the time.

New has a non-violent criminal history, according to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, and was arrested on Jan. 13 for allegedly drunk driving. Officials later added a felony charge for allegedly being a fugitive from justice. 

New is described as a 27-year-old white male with a tattoo over his right eyebrow. He was last seen wearing a plaid shirt, jeans and brown boots.
