Private survey: Hiring up modestly in May

(AP) WASHINGTON - A private survey shows U.S. businesses modestly boosted hiring in May, a sign that the job market is recovering slowly.

Payroll provider ADP says businesses added 133,000 jobs last month. That's higher than the revised total of 113,000 jobs it reported for April, which was the weakest in seven months.

The report only covers hiring in the private sector and excludes government job growth. The Labor Department will offer a more complete picture of May hiring on Friday.

The ADP survey has often deviated sharply from the government report. In March, the Labor Department said employers added just 154,000 jobs - much lower than ADP's estimate of 201,000.
